Gossip Girl's Dan and Serena represent the elegant (romanticized) union of middle class Brooklyn hipster and upper class Upper West Sider princess. Brooklyn Boy meets Upper West Side queen. In the first episode of GG, Dan catches sight of the stunningly beautiful Serena in Grand Central Station. Her beauty and allure grabs "lonely boy"'s attention. He later retrieves Serena's dropped phone and his awkward exchange of words signify his increasing crush on her. There is something unmistakably romantic about their dance together: they compliment each other so well. Dan provides Serena with escape from her usual going-ons. He offers her a change of scenery while Serena offers Dan something he cannot have. By acquiring her (making love to her, etc), Dan gets to experience a different habitus and posh lifestyle that Serena embodies. She is rich and classy and elegant while Dan is...a poet. He embodies the artistic/hipster talent of Williamsburg which is not colored by money, but rather aesthetic charm and charisma.

Serena has a lot of connections who are not so fond of Dan. Chuck Bass is one of them. Gossip Girl reassures us that in life, we do not and cannot live inside a vacuum where we are unaffected by our surrounding environment. When Dan and Serena are together, it really is a hit or miss. You can compare the two and find nothing and everything in common. It really is a hit or miss. Dan gets a fleeting taste of Serena's lifestyle and Serena gets a taste of charming Dan who is witty and funny. Most of all, Dan is sincere and passionate, unlike Chuck or Nate who believe in scoring many women. Though Dan is lured by a few women throughout the episodes he is poised man who is determined to get Serena back.

Compare socioeconomic backgrounds and you will see who embraces the idea of work more. Dan's sister is a fashion whore, his father is in a retired rock band and owns an art gallery, and his mother vacillates between that and another occupation. Dan is studying to be a writer/poet who relies on wordplay and wit/sarcasm to flourish. Serena's lifestyle is knee-deep in riches and wealth because her mother is simply swimming in gold and supplies her with nice wardrobes. She can also afford to go shopping at high-end places in Upper West Side. It is indisputable who has a "harder" lifestyle and who has a "well-off" lifestyle.

I come to associate myself with Dan Humphrey after I realized that he has sense of sarcasm and interesting masculine voice. Though his style is strangely metrosexual, his facial build is largely masculine and his plaid shirts fit him amazingly well. I adopted his style and molded myself into his personality because it was easy. It was easy to conform to a Dan Humphrey--be a poet/writer type and drink copious amounts of dark coffee as his character once said. He also has no inclination to save face. He says what he says and most times he doesn't even think about it. He does not think twice before speaking. But in doing this he comes off as nutty, weird, but still charming and charismatic.
